What are the causes and symptoms of low blood pressure? And what should you do about it? I had my blood pressure taken recently, and it was 114/62. I wasn’t sure if that was good or bad, so I decided to do a little research. The reason I wanted to investigate this—and the reason you should, too.
Normal blood pressure is around 120/80, although some doctors think that 115/75 is healthier. Generally speaking, the lower your blood pressure, the lower your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other heart-related problems. (So look at the bright side: it’s better than high blood pressure!)
Things That Lower Blood Pressure
Some of the things that typically lower blood pressure include not smoking, not being overweight, and being in good physical condition. So in other words, if you’re a slim, non-smoking athlete, don’t worry if your blood pressure is a little low. You’re probably very healthy.
Who Should Worry?
The people who have more to worry about when it comes to symptoms of low blood pressure are, first of all, the elderly. Pregnant women also tend to have slightly lower blood pressure, but it should return to normal after giving birth. Medications can also lower blood pressure, as can a lack of certain nutrients (such as B vitamins).
Symptoms
Blood Pressure At Age 62
Symptoms of low blood pressure to watch out for include dizziness and lightheadedness, nausea, blurred vision, fatigue or even depression, thirst, cold skin, shallow breathing, lack of concentration, and fainting.
The Dangers
The danger of extremely low blood pressure is that your organs might not be getting enough blood, meaning that they aren’t getting enough nutrients like oxygen, vitamins, etc. When this happens, it’s possible to go into shock; when this happens, your organs (brain, liver, etc.) can rapidly fail.
Many people experience a bit of dizziness and lightheadedness when the stand up from a sitting or lying position. This is called postural or orthostatic hypotension. Is it dangerous? Most of the time, no. The lightheadedness is caused by blood settling in the lower body. With less blood circulating, blood pressure drops.

With each beat, the heart forces blood through the body's arteries and veins. The pressure the blood exerts on these vessels is measured as blood pressure -- an important vital sign used by healthcare professionals. Healthy or normal blood pressure readings for children and adolescents are based on gender, height and age, and a teen’s blood pressure is in the healthy range if it falls below the 90th blood pressure percentile. Standardized tables that include blood pressure recommendations are readily available for doctors and health care providers to use when caring for the health of teenagers.

What Is Blood Pressure (BP)?
Blood pressure, abbreviated BP, is the pressure of the blood against the arterial walls.
Blood pressure results from the force of the heart that pumps the blood into the arteries, and the force of the arteries as they resist the blood flow.
Why Are Two Values in the Blood Pressure Reading?
Blood pressure is expressed with two values, separated by a slash and with a unit (mm Hg), for example 125/85 mm Hg; pronounced “125 over 85 millimeters of mercury” (according to height of a column in a blood pressure monitor).
The first (higher) value (125) represents blood pressure during the heart contraction (systole in Greek) and is called systolic blood pressure
The second (lower) value (85) represents blood pressure during the heart relaxation (diastole in Greek) and is called diastolic blood pressure
What is Normal Blood Pressure Range?
For an adult (18 years or older), any blood pressure between 120/80 and 90/60, measured in the sitting position on the upper arm, is considered as normal.
It was found out that people with blood pressure within this range are at least risk to suffer from heart attack, stroke or other circulatory disorders (1), so it is often called optimal, ideal or healthy blood pressure range.
Standing up for a while, exercising, stress and even appointment with a doctor can increase blood pressure for more than 10 mm Hg within few minutes, so an average value from several blood pressure measurements rather than one single measurement should be considered as actual blood pressure.
Blood pressure tends to increase with age, so many doctors consider readings as high as 150/85 in old people as normal. However, many health institutions claim that blood pressure above 120/80 should be always considered as increased risk to develop a circulation-related disorder (1).

Birth to Age 2
Blood pressure fluctuates after birth due to what the baby is doing, whether crying, sleeping or eating. It also varies due to the gestational age and weight of the baby, with a blood pressure above 79/54 usually considered elevated but not necessarily requiring treatment. By the time a child is 1 year old, high blood pressure is determined by percentiles of age and height by sex. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, a child whose blood pressure is in the top 5 percent for his sex, age and height is considered hypertensive. A 1-year-old boy of average height is considered hypertensive when his blood pressure is 103/56. This means if his systolic--or top--number is 103 or higher and/or his diastolic--or bottom--number is 56 or higher, he has hypertension. For a 1-year-old girl of average height, the numbers at which hypertension begin are 104/58. All numbers in this article are in reference to a child of average height for his age. A 2-year old boy is considered hypertensive with a blood pressure of 106/61; a 2-year-old girl is considered hypertensive at 105/63.
